World Water Day

Observed annually on 22nd March, World Water Day aims to raise public awareness of issues around fresh water and to encourage sustainable management of water resources.  The 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) recommended an international day celebrating freshwater; leading to the inaugural World Water day being held on 22nd March 1993.
Each year, the UN assembly identify an area of specific focus, with 2013 being the year of Water Cooperation. Water Cooperation is essential at all levels – local, regional and international, to ensure that water resources are managed in a way which allows equitable access to freshwater.
Raleigh have been working on water projects in Borneo for the past 10 years and in that time, have completed 37 Gravity Water Feeds, providing clean drinking water to communities in rural parts of Sabah. We have also repaired 8 existing Gravity Water Feeds, helping to ensure that local people do not lose their access to this valuable resource. In the last 2 years alone, Raleigh volunteers have laid over 47km of pipe, piping clean drinking water into 288 houses and 8 community buildings. See the link below for our 10 year slideshow with details of all our projects and achievements since our arrival in Borneo 10 years ago.
On expedition 13C, we have 3 Gravity Water Feed projects, providing 3 more communities with access to clean, safe drinking water, something that we and our volunteers are incredibly proud of. Our groups have been celebrating World Water Day today and we will be updating you in the next couple of days with details, photos and video of what they’ve been getting up to. In the meantime, below are some photos of their progress on the projects so far.

In addition, we also have 2 bespoke groups also working on Gravity Water Feed systems in rural Pitas. The groups are engineering students from Newcastle Uni and so bring some valuable knowledge on water systems with them. In addition to their hard work on the project, they have spent today teaching in the local school, educating the children about filtration systems and the benefits of water filtration. We’ll have an update and some photos of them and their progress soon.

To Alex Williams 13C Alpha 3

Hi Alex,
Well you will now half way through your adventure. I cannot believe how quick it has all gone. Hope you are enjoying your second allocation with the water feed. It bet it's hard work but also lots of fun. We are all addicted to the blog and love reading what everyone is getting up to. The comments left by family and friends are also interesting!!!
Everyone is well at home. Rob text me today to ask how you are getting on and he is going to try and send you a message. Dad saw Brad and also James and they also say "hi" and they are missing their drinking buddy! Dad says that at this rate you will be playing football when you get back as they are so behind with their matches.
The weather here is dreadful. Heavy snow today and the weekend doesn't good either! What I wouldn't do for some sunshine!
I cannot believe that we finish school next week for Easter and the weather is so bad. This time last year it was gorgeous!
Nana and Grandad are well but Nana has lost her voice as she's had a bad cough but she is ok. Grandad enjoying the blog and doing his research on everything.
We miss you so much and the house seems so quiet without you.
Take care and keep working hard and having fun.
Hopefully we will see some pictures of you soon.
Love you lots
Mum

For Liselot BekendamAlpha 8
Hey Lies,
We gaan morgen ' heuken'.

TO: HUGH BIRLEY - ALPHA 4

FROM: FRANCES BIRLEY

Not sure that I have got these blogs right as none seem to have shown up yet! Harry broke up today and has sent you a message! Weather dreadful here; really wet and windy and more flood warnings for Hammoon! Fingers crossed it has improved by Wednesday when I get the boat home - you know how much I LOVE that boat at the best of times! Collect James tomorrow and then he and Harry are off skiing. I know they will miss you. Looks though as if you are having a great time too. Letter in the post!!
Lots of love

To Tom Rumble, Newcastle Uni group...

So pleased to hear a report about you all. Hope everything is going well and you're not getting too bitten by mozzies. Strange to think of you in a school teaching in Borneo, when your sis is doing the same in Scunthorpe!

Have lots of fun and make the most of it. We are all proud of you. With all our love, mum & dad xx

Louis Coster Alpha 8

Hi lieve Louis,
Thomas slaapt vanavond hier, in jouw bed.
