The Loop visit Alpha Five

The Loop visit Alpha 5...

Up bright and early we leave Fieldbase as the sun rises over Kota Kinabalu. What a stunning drive! Sweeping up the mountain roads past Mount Kinabalu with the Bravo stocked full of materials for the projects and a mini shop so the Ventures can get a sugar fix mid-phase.

A few more hours of driving and it's time to go off road.... Lots of fun bumping around the dirt tracks as we drove deeper into the rainforest. The vegetation was awesome with trees looming above us and getting denser as we neared the camp.

Alpha Five's camp is in the depth of the jungle so we put on our hiking boots and trekked in to find them. Even in the evening sun it was a hot and sweaty trek.

Jodi, Alyrene and Joseph and their Imbak welcome sign

Trekking in to Raleigh Camp

The welcome we got was well worth it though! Alex, the Day Leader was there to greet us and set up our beds. She then directed us to Imbak Falls so we could wash before dinner.

Joost, James, Alyrene, Connor, Jodi, Sarah, Joseph, Daniel,
Sam, Zino, Nicky, Dwana, Alex & Hatty

The falls are even more beautiful than on the pictures and getting into the water was like stepping into a refreshing warm bath.

James, Sam and Zino then showed us the progress they're making with the project. Raleigh has been working in Imbak for years; building bridges and board walks. This year the group are again assisting with the construction of a suspension bridge between two research camps.

So far they have laid the wiring between the camps and begun winching giant logs across the river. Joost proudly showed us the video of the first log being swung across the ravine. It was amazing to see the fantastic and tiring work they are doing.

As well as all the hard work constructing the bridge they also made time to plan a magical evening for us.

We were asked to walk down to the observation deck which overlooks the magnificent falls around dinner time for a candle lit picnic.

The orange glow of the candles as we reached the falls was beautiful and the moonlight reflecting on the water, magical.

As for the food. It was more of a banquet than a picnic! Daniel as head chef excelled again. Homemade in the camp oven we had flat bread with hummus and garlic mushrooms for starters.

Loopy cooks Daniel, Alex and James
Then for mountains of a delicious curry and rice as we caught up with the Venturers and PMs sharing stories and catching up on each others news.

As the clouds drew in hiding the moon and threatening a storm we headed back to camp for the third course of our feast. A mouth-wateringly good crumble curtosy of the lovely Hatty.

With very full stomachs we whiled away the rest of the evening playing games and hearing about the groups most embarrassing moments (which we'll not divulge on here..!)

Dwana, Nicky, Daniel and Sam

Going to bed in the hammock to the sound of the jungle we felt incredibly lucky to visit such a hidden place and be welcomed so wonderfully by Alpha Five.

Stay tuned to hear how the rest of the Alpha groups are getting on in the rest of the Loop update which will follow soon. So far Joseph, Jodi, Sam and Alyrene (the phase 2 Loopers) have received fantastic welcomes to the project sites and I am looking forward to sharing more of their experiences soon.

Alpha 3, gravity water feeder, phase 2

Hi Tash,
We're following the blog daily, and think the projects all look fantastic. I can't wait to hear more about the gravity water feeder project. We're checking the blog looking for more info.

We missed you at Passover last night. Sophie refused to join the table, Jasmine was making silly faces, David and I along with Katie, Sarah and others led the service. Much giggling ensued with regular leaning to the left and weird motzah sandwiches. Everyone asked after you and was so impressed by and interested in what you are doing.

I'll blog again soon.
Lots of love,
Karen

To James Bryer, Alpha 5 – Phase Two.
Heyy Jamesy!! Eeeeep!! It’s so amazing to have heard so much about what you’ve been getting up too on the blog recently- and eeep!! Its all sounds so so incredible Jamesy!!
The photo’s of the scenery and where you are staying look unbelievable! It looks perfect! And yeyeyy happy-face! I cant wait to hear all about the suspension bridge that you’re building! It must be such an amazing and rewarding thing to be doing! I’m so proud of you!
And nomnomnom, the banquet you cooked sounded so yummy! I’m so so SOOOO excited for the day we can share a chicken Korma and naan bread over a game of halo, EEEEEP summer is going to be so perfect Jamesy!! And mwahaaa prepare to have your butt kicked on halo and AOE! Hehee!! And mmm nomonmm!! I’ve just cooked my mum some spaghetti, with these amazing meatballs and sauce I made- yummy they were so nice! I’ll have to cook it for you when youre home, eeep!! (WHICH IS ONLY 5 MORE WEEKS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!) Jamesy I’ve never ever ever been this excited for anything before!! Last Thursday(which was the half way mark!) I was singing ‘wooooah we’re half way there, oooo-oooh living on a prayer!’ all day...my friends absolutely loved my pitch perfect singing... haha!! It’s made me such a happy girlie hearing all of the amazing things you’ve been getting up too Jamesy! Knowing that you’re happy and having an incredible time is one of the bestest feelings ever!
We break up for the Easter holiday’s on Friday, eeep I’m so excited to have a break from college! I’m 6 hours in to my 15-hour textiles exam, and feeling okay about it! It’s super super stressful as youre under a strict time limit to finish your final piece- but it’ll all be done and handed in on during the last week of April- and then textiles is DONEEE! So not long to go at all now, eeeep!! I’m making 2 big wall hangings, using lots of dyes and paints, and different fabrics that are rolled across it and draping down it- I overheard an AS student asking how I did it and if she could make something similar.. awwwh it was so nice to hear! Happyface! AND YAAAAAAAAAAAYY!! I finished my choreography on Friday! Eeeeep!! I’m so so happy that I’m done! There are a couple of things I would like to polish up on before the exam (which is the last week of April... eeek!!) but apart from that, I’m over the moon that I’ve got a first-draft of it, eeep such a weight off my shoulders!
and eeeeeeeeeepp Jamesy!! I’m so so so so soooo excited!! My dance teacher sent me a link to the Jasmin Vardimon dance company website, and they’re holding open auditions (they’re free, so eeep! nothing to lose!) for a year’s training course with her! She’s the most amazing contemporary choreographer, and her style of dance is by far my favourite!! (The kind where you have to wear knee pads, jump and roll off of tables and ropes etc.. eeep! It’s so much fun!) If I did get in, I would train with the senior members of the company, and Jasmin Vardimon herself (wow!) It’s a full-time course October- May, Monday- Friday, in Ashford (super super close to London and Reading!) It would be the most amazing dance training, and at the end of the year you would be able to tour the dance pieces! Eeep I’m so so excited! The audition is the 6th April, I doubt I’ll get in as I will be one of the youngest there by far, but even so; from the sounds of it, the audition is going to be so much fun and such an amazing experience! Eeeep!!
Thinking of you all the time Jamesy and missing you with all my heart! You mean the world to me! I love you forever and always, your bella dog girl, Char xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Dropped James and Hugh off at airport and saw the Doreys. Poor Charlie broke his shoulder about 3 weeks ago and came home early. He is still going to Tanzania with Op Raleigh though as it should be nearly better by then. Dan going to Southampton Uni in Sept. He has just finished his job and mentioned that he was seriously thinking of meeting up with you and doing some travelling! I suggested that he e-mail you whilst you were in Australia. Spoke to James today and they are having a good time but missing you!! Hope all going well and looking forward to reading next update.
Lots of love

From your Dad!
Hi Jim Jam. Its great to read your group's blog and to see your smiling face in the photos - you've perfected the art eventually! I'm so proud of you son that you're doing something so worthwhile and gutsy. Your project looks really interesting, challenging and beautifully located, so that's really pleasing. All's well at home, nothing major to report. Grandma's just got back from a wonderful Israel trip. Mum's working hard, and Barney's finally doing some GCSE work! All the family send their love & prayers. Keep healthy and stay positive. We all love you James. Dad XX

Hatty Lord Alpha 5

Ode to Hatty........
To our lovely Hatty whom we are so proud,
So tall and beautiful spotted in the crowd.

Borneo with Raleigh International she headed,
a bit excited and anxious..nothing to be dreaded.

In phase 1 helped to build a school,
a day of digging then a bathe in a pool.

A bed in a corner of a community hall,
creature comforts look limited and small.

You all look so happy so can't be that bad,
Oh I love to read the blog on my beloved iPad!

Phase 2 is in the jungle for you,
building bridges and making a crumble or two.

Enjoy phase 3 a dive and a trek,
Dad is so jealous .....flipping heck!

To see you again I cannot wait,
31st May is the actual date.

Take care and enjoy this amazing time,
to our lovely Hatty...Daddy's and mine!!

Xxxx
