We declare the kindergarten...open!

Education, something we take for granted, but for some of the remote villages in Sabah these are luxuries that they could only dream of. For Kampong Mandurian Laut, they are now a reality thanks to the hard work of expedition 12A.

The villages cooked feasts, they gave speeches and welcomed us with open arms as we celebrated the opening of the kindergarten. Here are the best bits!

Jargon Buster

On Raleigh we use a lot of words that you may not be familiar with, so here is a glossary to help you along - and also help you understand your loved ones when they arrive back from expedition!

13C: official number of this year's spring expedition in Borneo.

3 Bowling: a system to stop bacteria/germs spreading when eating. All eating utensils are dipped in bleached water and then clean water before eating. After eating, utensils are washed as normal, dipped in clean water and then bleach water before putting away.

Alpha groups: the official name of project groups. There are nine Alpha groups altogether on this expedition.

Base camp: this is where the Venturers will come to when they first arrive. It is also used for training and Changeover.

Basha: a jungle bed, made up of a tarpaulin, mosquito net and a hammock and usually hung between two trees.

Bravos: the Raleigh Land Rovers used for the Loop.

Changeover: the two days in between each Phase where Alpha groups are reallocated into new phases and groups and get to meet up with everyone.

Delta Groups: Venturer training groups.

Fieldbase: the Raleigh office, a house where the fieldbase staff, including the programme manager and the logistics team live, eat and work.

HCV: Host Country Venturer (ie Venturers from Malaysia).

KK: Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah.

Kampung: the Malay term for village or community.

Long Drop: a 'jungle loo'. Literally just a deep hole in the ground, it is usually the first thing to be done when making camp.

Longs: long-sleeved tops and trousers. 'Longs-o-clock' is 6pm, at dusk when the mozzies come out to play.

The Loop: a tour of the project sites, usually undertaken by the logistics team bringing food supplies, a few much-needed treats and, of course, the post!

Milo: a chocolate malt drink, served hot, or iced.

Tango groups: staff training groups.

Trangia: a portable cooking stove, mostly used on trekking.
These are compact and small and therefore easier to carry than other cooking equipment.

Venturers: the volunteers, aged between 17-24, who are out on expedition.

Volunteer Project Managers/ PMs: volunteers over 25. There are always at least 2 PMs on each project site helping to support and guide the Venturers through their projects.
