Zero calling all Alpha groups back to Basecamp

We have one more day left of phase two and our Alpha groups are having their final day on projects before coming back to Basecamp for changeover.  Your blog messages, post and YouTube comments are all ready and we’ll be reporting back on Sunday with news of the final phase Alpha groups.

Changeover is also the end of expedition for our seven weekers - Daisy, Andy, Rowan, Seb, Jess and Gary who will be leaving for their next adventure.

Andy spent phase 1 in Kampung Alab...

...where Gary left his mark in concrete.

In Lingka Bugan, Jess was part of the first Alpha group to lay foundations to the village's kindergarten.

Rowan helped build a boardwalk at the Sun Bear Centre in Sepilok.

So did Seb - pictured here collecting gravel for the cement mix to concrete in the posts.

And Daisy is there now - putting the final touches to the phase 2 Alpha team's work.
At Fieldbase we cover the radios 24 hours a day - radio call sign Zero. Alpha teams radio check in the evening and give us a sitrep (situation report) telling us what they’ve been up to and what they plan to do for the next day. We close off every radio call with "this is Zero listening out on channels one and two" - the Fieldbase trademark.

This morning we had Alpha 4 excited for their end of phase treat – heading to see the Orang-utans’ feeding time at the sanctuary thay they’ve been working right next to everyday.

Alpha 3 in Danum Valley were back at Mengaris camp at the Danum Valley Field Centre having trekked back in just four and a half hours. They’d spotted a family of wild Orang-utans hanging out by the river last night. PM Ed has been there since the beginning of expedition and will now be saying goodbye to the PRD for a phase out trekking.

Both Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 now have walls up and roofs and floorboards laid at their kindergartens, completing a phase of hard graft.

We’ve just loaded up a truck at Fieldbase with kindergarten furniture, ready for phase three Alpha 1 and 2 to fill the new buildings ready for them to be opened in a few weeks.

On Dive Island, Alpha 6 were celebrating Shaun’s birthday today, having all passed their PADI open water, advanced or rescue qualifications.

Our logistics team have already set off armed with re-supplies for phase three and ingredients for a barbecue for Alpha 5 who will be arriving at Basecamp a day earlier than everyone else at the end of their trek in the Kiulu Valley.

Here at the office, we have a new member of the team - Kar Lye has joined as a member of staff from Raleigh Kuala Lumpur.  She’ll be recruiting Host-Country Venturers and promoting Raleigh Borneo in Malaysia.

What makes expeditions really memorable is the range of people taking part from a mix of backgrounds and nationalities. On 11K, Venturers from Kuala Lumpur and from Sabah villages have brought a fascinating insight into Malay traditions, culture and way of life. They have also provided essential translation between the Raleigh groups and local people.

For Venturers from Malaysia, seeing Sabah from a completely new angle on expedition is a unique and special experience. We are working to promote that to young people across East and West Malaysia and Kar Lye will be working with Mac and Sarah – our Country Director and Country Programme Manager to recruit more Host Country Venturers onto expedition.

Until we return on Sunday - this is Zero listening out on channels one and two.

Sarah listening out in the Fieldbase radio room.

Haha Hooray, hopefully this is the first comment of the new update! :D This says that you'll be receiving all our blog messages, letters and other things later this week! Exciting news, i have given a letter to your parents, but literally after i've posted this blog comment, i'm feeling much better to head down town to post a few more letters and things from me, so hopefully you'll receieve them in time or soon! I just read that all your group on Dive Island passed your open water or rescue qualifications! I remember you mentioning this a few times before you left, so CONGRATULATIONS! :D Hope you're having a brilliant time whilst you're there, not long to go till you're back in Newquay! >:D I'm currently catching up on a little work and thinking of genius christmas present ideas for all, so expect the unexpected... or that might just be a red herring.. Yeah :P Don't injure yourself at all in the last few weeks, hope to hear from you soon, and if not i'm jumping you when you're back..! :D Stay safe and be careful, I miss you!!

Byes for now Paigearooni! With love from Chloe <>< xxx

P.S I'll most likely post another comment on here sometime later because i'm pretty sure i've forgotten something; though don't want to spam this all up with love from me, might make others jealous ;D

P.P.S Any other animal contact yet? :D Other than the constant bug interaction? Haha! x

Was net even met vaja in amstelveen, heb I phone besteld, ben er zo zo blij mee. Komt pas over 2 weken hoor maar lijkt me zo leuk.

Hi Jemma (Alpha 2)
Welcome back to field base. Hope you enjoyed helping with the building of the kindergarten. I know you will have enjoyed the interactions with the locals.
Finally we have had a frost here, it was a beautiful drive to work this morning with a red sunrise just beginning to show and the sliver of a new moon. The forecast for the weekend is a bit wet and windy. We are off to London this weekend to stay with Ash. I know Dad and I are going to the BaaBaas match (v Australia) on Sat, Danny C is playing for BB's! The rest of the weekend is a secret appparently but will include Ashley.
Have had a busy week and today had 4 pts for SFBT which went well. I am helping Joy move onFriday afternoon. She is excited about her new flat. I can hardly believe you are soon to start the final project. All of a sudden it seems to be going quickly. Think ing of you darling and hoping there have not been too many medical emergencies! Much love

Hope all well with you and you have had a good time on this project. How was the diving? The island sounds fabulous. I am sure you must be looking forward to seeing Jem even if it is briefly. Not that long now til you are back together for the rest of your adventure.
Andy is a few weeks into new job and it is goong well. Ash continues to keep us entertained with her various antics and dramas. It is great that she has had promotion at work in such a short space of time. I exchanged text with your Mum a couple of weeks ago, we were both our Christmas shopping at the time. I went to Cornwall last weekend which was good. Dad is doing ok at present. Hope your ear has held up!! Enjoy the last phase. Lots of love Andy and HIlarie

Hi lieve Maus, geweldige brieven vandaag gelezen!
Have fun & enjoy, love you Pappa XXX

Great to read on the blog that the kindergarten building has come on so well. Hope you've got some post waiting for you on your return to basecamp. Had good weekend at Grandma and Grandad and went to hear Grandma sing which was great especially as their conductor was taken ill a few days before and they had to find a last-minute replacement! Jo didn't come as she had a school trip to London to see Hamlet, lucky her (starring Michael Sheen - remember how great he was as Brian Clough?). Apparently it was brilliant. I showed Gma and Gdad your NZ you tube compilation which they hadn't seen so they really enjoyed that (although a bit bemused by the 'zorbing' ....). Very much enjoyed seeing all the photos of NZ relatives and declared Cosmo to look very Honeyish which I couldn't really see myself! Just come back from bookgroup at Karen's where as usual didn't talk about any book but had a good gossip! Arsenal beat Borussia Dortmund tonight and so won their group and are through to the knockout stage now :) Barbarians vs Australia this Sat with Sonny Bill Williams, Piri Weepu, Mealamu, Matfield, Habana, the 3 Welsh Joneses, Mauro Bergamasco and Peter Stringer (yay!) among others. Should be a good match but I'll be at choir rehearsal before the Messiah in the evening. Karen and Deborah are coming along to support! Looking forward to seeing where you're going next. Missing you lots and lots! Lots of love Mum xxxxx

You've got a million ways to make me laugh (yeah)
Your looking out for me you've got my back
It's so good to have you around

You know the secrets I could never tell
And when I'm quiet you break through my shell
Don't feel the need to do a rebel yell
Cause you keep my feet on the ground

You don't get angry when I change the plans
Somehow you're never out of second chances
Won't say '' I told you'' when I'm wrong again
I'm so lucky that i found

A True Friend
You're here till the end
You pull me aside when something ain't right
You talk with me now and into the night
Till it's alright again

True Friends will go to the ends of the earth
To find the things you need
Friends hang on through the ups and the downs
Cause they've got someone to believe in

A True Friend
You're here till the end
You pull me aside when something ain't right
You talk with me now and into the night
No need to pretend
You're here till the end
You pull me aside when something ain't right
You talk with me now and into the night
Till it's alright again

Your a True Friend
