Back to Basecamp

Early Thursday morning, phase 1 Alpha groups awoke early, took down their mosquito nets, packed their rucksacks, loaded vehicles and waved goodbye to the villages and jungles that had become home over the past 19 days as they started their long journey back to Basecamp.

Alpha 5 were the first to return, having actually trekked in the night before for early use of the showers and a giant barbecue feast for their final night.

Expedition’s Posh and Becks aka Jemma and James were reunited when Alpha 6 arrived just in time for lunch.

Not far behind came the two teams battling for best kindergarten; Alpha 1 and Alpha 2.

Alpha 1 were given a big send-off from their villagers on the last night and were lavished with handmade bead jewellery

Last to arrive but first for hugs and enthusiasm were Alpha 4 and Alpha 3

While old friends reunited, new friends (recent arrivals our 7 week expedition explorers) continued with their induction and training in preparation for joining their very own Alpha group the following morning.
Kilian, Sophie, Lisa, Natalie and Ben practice river crossings
The blog and all your comments were displayed, post was delivered and phase one news and gossip shared by all. Your letters, messages and comments really do make the world of difference and it is always the first thing everyone asks about, so please keep them coming.

Oliver reads his post and blog messages
That night, after hugs and hellos had been shared, post had been read and a hot dinner eaten, it was time for the phase 1 skits.  Each team was beaming and bursting full of stories, which were performed to the rest of the expedition and our panel of Fieldbase judges, each hoping they might be in with a chance of scooping the winning prize - tubs of ice cream.
Alpha 1 brought jungle fashion to the catwalk

Alpha 6 shared their best bits including photos of them at each of their camp sites and finished with a local song taught by their jungle guide

Alpha 3 performed the Danum Haka....

... treated us to the national anthem of PRD and Alex's helicopter dance made it's full expedition debut.....

...earning them some high scores from the judges.

Alpha 5 performed a freeze-frame re-enactment of their highlights

Alpha 2 parodied hit song "you've got the love" with "we've got the guns" highlighting the bulging biceps of each member since laying the foundations of their kindergarten
Alpha 4 stole the show and the ice cream with their rendition of "we are hardcore"

For Rufus,
Wow what amazing sidees, will they be permanent. I was really sad to have missed your phone calls, I got home minutes afterwards. I have heard you sound really English.
I am thoroughly enjoying the blog and all the pictures and wish I was 18 and doing all the fun things but probably glad not to be having watery porridge and death by a thousand itchy bites.
Gik is very keen that you are keeping a journal to remember all this , he is probably right as even all the things that feel vivid in your mind today will fade . Lots of love mum. xx

Maurits van Rhijn - from Alpha 4 to Alpha 2
In NL winnen Twente, PSV & AZ. Aardig ook in boek van O'Hanlon; beschrijft SAS training, opzetten hammock, malaria, high spot of the day; cleaning your teeth, ...
"The tropics takes people in different ways.... and then after 2 weeks you'll be used to it. And once in the jungle proper you'll never want to come out."
Humm, not sure about the last.. willen je toch wel weer graag terug zien binnenkort! Een goede week, ik krabbel weer snel wat en have fun out there! Houden van je , Pappa xxx
