Expedition 11K is officially starting!

We are here! Expedition 11K is officially starting. We've been out here as a volunteer staff team for 2-3 weeks now - learnt about Sabah, mastered the art of hammock sleeping and camp craft and discovered the jungle and project sites and had a lot of fun.

Dressing up as musical legends to get ready for the start of expedition has been a highlight - see if you can spot Lady GaGa, Johnny Rotten and Mark Knopfler, David Bowie, the Spice Girls and Freddie Mercury. We'll keep dropping in music heroes to the blogs as the projects get underway.

The 11K staff team Raleigh t-shirted and ready for expedition.
Music legends - warming up for 11K.
The first venturers from Malaysia - host country venturers (HCVs) have just arrived and so we are well and truly started!

There will be 60 venturers from across six countries arriving at our base camp tomorrow. A week of getting ready for environmental, community and adventure projects lies ahead and everyone will spend a night in the jungle as part of this.

There will be six 'delta groups for training and then we'll allocate everyone into an 'Alpha' project team. Have a read through the project previews to see what lies in store.

Groups will be 'deployed' out to their projects for phase 1 (first 3 weeks) on Saturday and we'll be joining them for the first week so that we can come back with news.

If you are on your way here - we can't wait to see you. For everyone at home, we'll report back on training and project allocations once everyone has deployed so that you know who is on which project.

We'd love to bring you all the stories as they happen but won't have a chance to log on to blogger until at least Sunday. So, for this week no news is good news and we'll have a bumper blog edition next week.

Keep the comments coming... the 'loop' will be going out to projects in the middle of phase 1 and will deliver your comments and messages, along with any post. They'll also be displayed with the blog at the end of each phase when we go back to base camp for changeover.

Music heroes: part 1 - Britney and Slash - Dr Jen and Andy logs.

To James the ear: thanks so much for your massive email. I feel as if I am there with you because you wrote in such colourful detail. Take care with your ear: I burst my drum after a bad waterski slalom fall and I still feel I have to be careful and have never dived because of it. I am keeping my fingers crossed that you get the St John job: wouldn't that be icing on the cake. So, good luck to you and all in the jungle. Give Jemma our best wishes. Love Dad x

For Oliver Cobb,
Dear Oliver,
We are all missing you here and everyone is asking about you at DOS and various people from Worksop and Retford. Weather here is pretty rubbish, I guess it is a bit warmer where you are! The show is going really well and I am very pleased with the finished product but at least you will get to see the video. Amazingly there have been no more dramas! I hope you aren't missing us too much, enjoy every minute as this is a fantastic experience. Nothing new has happened re UCAS but I don't expect anything for a while anyway.
Love you loads and loads.
Mum and Dad xx

Hi Rufus , we are thinking about all the new things you are doing and wondering how much fun it must be. We are really looking forward to hearing about it. I hope the surprise gift will be appreciated by all , and the mossies not too fierce, jen and dave showed me how to crab yesterday dropping the nets was like the man overboard procedure , quite tricky and the crabs were not very forthcoming ,love mum and dad. At Augusta Harry and Declan tried to draw a moustache but I was sleeping on my side so they only got to draw 1half and then Harry tried to draw the usual on my face but i luckily awoke, Sebastian

To Paige, hope you are keeping well and enjoying yourself. We are waiting in anticipation for the next blog so we can read what you have all been up to. Really weird for us not being able to talk to you. Just wanted to let you know that your future cousin is very close to being born, we received a call from Uncle David today ( Saturday 15th) to say that the birth was imminent. We'll let you know when we receive news. We don't know when you'll get to read this so Happy Birthday for Saturday. Missing you loads. Love Mum, Dad & Blaise xxx
