Time for Alpha 3 and Toboh Pahu to celebrate!

Despite the gloomy grey skies over Ranau, Alpha 3 and Toboh Pahu had reason to sing and dance yesterday as they celebrated the opening of their completed gravity water feed system.

Along with Mac and Kate, we travelled with Kadri Taib (Coca-Cola Communications and Public Affairs Director), David (from westcoast Communications) and Halim (from a Malay daily), to celebrate the occasion with Alpha 3 and Toboh Pahu. Also present was the Political Secretary to Datuk Masidi Manjun, Datuk Amisah Yassin, representing him for the ceremony. Datuk Masidi is a big supporter of Raleigh Borneo and was invited as the guest of honour but could not make it due to prior obligations.

Alpha 3 and the villagers spent 9 weeks of very hard work laying and working with 7 km of pipe, 9 tonnes of concrete, 4 tanks, 50 taps supplying water to about 300 villagers. The community and all of Alpha 3 worked and lived together, undoubtedly building ties lasting a lifetime. The representative of the village and the Raleigh volunteers (project managers and venturers) expressed heartfelt gratitude and affection for each other in their speeches - I can only imagine the emotional goodbyes on their last day!
After the speeches, Datuk Amisah Yassin turned on the ceremonial tap and even splashed the crowd with the water that came out of it! Dancing and singing followed. Alpha 3 did a brilliant performance, making lively musical beats with jerry cans, pot lids, water pipes, woks, and a variety of other things a la STOMP. Fiona and Ashleigh impressed everyone by taking the mic and singing Sayang Kinabalu (a folk song)!  The school children also performed a traditional dance and sang some songs and got almost everyone to join in. Then it was lunch time and everyone dug into the great spread that had been prepared for the ocassion.

It was a super celebration and we are all so very proud of Alpha 3 and everyone who was involved since Phase 1. Great work and congratulations!

Hello MICHAEL WALLER Alpha 8
We hope you're well and back with your group enjoying your last few days with Raleigh. There's not much news here, Martin has his interview tomorrow, he's very calm - he knows his stuff! Scott has handed in his notice at Sedgefield school, he starts his new post in June. Martin was talking to Jonty on facebook and he's now looking for a job, we still haven't seen any of your pals, they must have gone into hibernation until you get back! Ellen + Des have been clearing more rubble, about 200 bags so far! They've also cut the trees in the little garden to build the fences etc. for the horse trials at Wendy's. We'd love to hear from you (hint, hint), to see how you are, you'll surely have some access to phones + emails on your weeks travelling, or you could just text, I'll keep an eye on your balance and top it up if need to. We're all looking forward to seeing you and your photo's - John is wondering if (a) you still have the camera and (b) if it's still intact! Have a great time, keep in touch. Don't forget a little something for Des + Ellen and Jane and you know I like buttons! Lots of love from Babs/Mam, John and Martin. XXX

Hey Han, it's Marisa. You're coming up to the last few days in Borneo and I bet its just flown by! But you still have many adventures left which is exciting!

I've been home a few days now... I met up with Kirsty for a coffee on Sunday which was nice. Yesterday (Tuesday) I went to Ally Pally with some of my iceland lot to go ice skating. I realised how much of a rip off it was when we went skating at christmas! We paid like £13 for a 40 minute session? and yesterday i paid £7 for hours! ..Today I went to Chelsea.. pretty standard. haha.

Oh and you're going to be proud of me, I'm off to the British Library tomorrow to revise. How good am I? lol!

I keep looking at the birthday card you got me! It's just soso cute. And i realised there's animals at the front. STANDARD HAN. :D

I hope you're well and that everything's fine. I can't wait to talk to you.

love you lots and lots an jelly tots. keep safe. speak soon. Moris xxxxxxxxx

PS this is probs the last message i'm going to send you before you fly off down under, so have a safe journey and i better be the first person you facebook slash skype. Cos im the bestest friend you have hahaaa. Lots of love. MARVIN x

Hallo!

To Pieter Verbeek - Ha Pieter, ben net gisteren teruggekomen uit India. Kwam Aak nog tegen op het vliegveld, hij kwam net terug uit Chili. India was geweldig!

Hi Kitty (Alpha 9)

Just to let you know Jessica has moved out of your room but Tiggy has moved back in! The drawer is now her favourite snoozing spot again.Funny she's never bothered for the last 10 weeks.Think she has ESP and knows you're coming back.
Lucky for you your riding boots got caught up in a spell of frantic tack cleaning and are shining like new.
Hope the diving was as good as it sounded. Grandpa C is going to be bored now he can't stalk you on the blog anymore. We think you will have to spend a few days with him going through your photos.Nana has had her pacemaker changed so her batteries are good for another few years and grandad is right up to full pace now walking Roly up to 5 miles a day just like before his op !! Will bring you up to speed on all the other news when we see you on Monday.
Enjoy your last few days and keep in touch esp if there are any delays.
See you at Newcastle Airport (We might not be alone!)
Love you loads.

For Thomas M (Alpha 1)
Can't wait to see you on Monday Night. I'll be waiting for you in Vancouver. David C called wondering when you're back. Casey says Hi, and she is checking out the blog for news. She now has a baby girl 'Darbin', and was so excited for you about Raleigh! Wants us to come to Maryland to visit. Chein is all moved in and knows all the rules according to Smudge and Sammy. She's doing very well, even took her to work last night - but she's maybe not ready for that, too excited. Have to put in housing application before May 1st for UBC. Anyway, I'm off to work now but I'll see you very soon. Enjoy every moment!
Lots of love, Mum.

Hi Mica (Alpha 3)
Well you did it you survived and came out smiling you look really well. I proud of you I hope you still intend on going travelling, it would be a shame if you didn't spend some time getting to experience such a beautiful part of the world without having to work and before reality bites you in the Proverbial. Things here on the home front is pretty standard, we went to visit Bailey's school to be and it seems ok Easter break starts on the 11th and i'v volunteered (I must be mad because i'm so tired) to work the first week because the school is opening up for a booster week so the year sixes will be in school getting extra tuition in the mornings and Chris (LSA) and I will be doing some 'fun' activities with them from 1-3, SATS starts on the 9th May. Well Mica you take care love you loads
