Phase 2 Allocations

After the thrill of allocations, the groups settled in to become bonded teams who have now set out to their exciting projects all around Sabah.

And here are the results of who went where.

Weather conditions have once again prevented Alpha 1 from entering their original project site in Kampung Sonsogon Magandai. Thanks to our excellent project partners, AFC, Alpha 1 has a new project in Kampung Solungkapit, building a gravity water feed system for a population of about 200 people.

The venturers who will be teamed up with PMs Shaun, Neil and Clare are Robert H James, Kristan M Emery, Jonathan H Downing, Marian A Sue, Leah Cunningham, Barney P Rowland, Christopher Twydell,       Theo Tibbitts, Maud C Versteylen and Akram Lemseffer

Going to Alpha 2 to continue their work of building compost toilets on Pulau Maliangin with PMs Graham, Paula, Tom and photographer Belinda are Amber R Marriott, Mathieu R Langeslag, Katherine A Twelves, Nicola Anne Bell, Tom Day Goodacre, Roscoe Simon Blevins, Nick Harman, William A Low, Catrin Williams,
Ciara L McGlade and Mathias T Bidault

To Alpha 3 with PMs Rory, Rob and admin Kate to build a gravity water feed in Kampung Toboh Pahu are
Robert M East, Eline A van der Ploeg, Onne P van der Graaf, Arthur Derom, Matthew Jones, Carly A Fletcher, Georgia Harvey, Sisi Liu, Frederick M Pugh, Jenny R Kohnhorst and Callum M Junor

Saving the sunbears at Sepilok with Alpha 4's PMs Tom and Leanne are Daniel J Stephenson, Kelly Brown, Thomas F Massicotte, Thomas Shelton, Charlotte P Dickson, Jerri K Butler, Tijmen G Boer, Isobel H Reid, Max Beelaerts, Cheryl K Emvula, Rebecca Hutchens and Andrew J McVitty

With PMs Helen and Petr to build a gravity water feed system for the studies centre in Taliwas are, Seng Fung Wong, Hidde Hinloopen, Rhianydd S Jeffreys, Timothy Browning, Anjalee R Patel, Ryan Hoey, Bente L van Keulen, Thomas Watson, Adam Hext, Ria (Alexandria) Hanish-Oakes and Michael Waller

Alpha 6's intrepid team, will consist of PMs Amy and Stu, and ventutrers, Benjamin H Aisbitt, Samuel J Willetts, Denise P De Souza, Rosalind Ingram, Annabelle C Chelsom, James D Astbury, Lee Cockin, Hannah Tilley, Jonathan P Hoskin, Christopher Aylward and Rebecca Gould

Alpha 6 will be relocating from Kampung Monguwou to Kampung Dalamason to see if they can find weird and wonderful creatures in the jungles nearby.

Ready for the island for some diving lessons together with PMs Dick and Max in Alpha 7 are Pim Rusius, Stefan J Otto, Louise Hutley, Charlotte L Jackson, Joe Mangan, Fiona R Wiedmann, Camilo A Gonzalez Rodriguez, Florence R Hayes, Joseph Howell, Mica Murphy and James E Cook. After Mamutik Alpha 7 will be heading over to Long Pasia for a challenging 12-day trek.

Alpha 8's PMs James and Charlie will be trekking the rainforests of Long Pasia for 12 days together with  Syazrina R Saharudin, Stefan J Pollitt, Simon Williams, William Mackintosh, Fenella Maudslay, Bethany J Corfe, Pieter Verbeek, Avril Howard, Ashleigh R Irvine, Nina L Clifton and Lorne Paterson. After their hard work on trek they will be off to Mamutik for their turn with some diving lessons.

And finally, Aplha 9's Johnny and John will be trekking, diving and trekking again with Samuel H Mizen, Jenni Birch, Gregory P Vieux-O'Connor, Paz Nansi, Nicholas Swaffer, Vivianne B Breuer, Laura Coombes, Kelly M Vincent, Sarah K Barnes, Samuel Clift and Daniel Razmy Mohd Husni.

Unlike the other trek groups, Alpha 9 will be exploring the Kiulu Valley and the Crocker Range on their trek, with 6 days on dive island in between.

That's all from us right now, but stay tuned for updates from our artist Helen, who will tell us about the artwork that some of the groups have been working on in Phase 1!

Hi Rob, Pleased to see you have survived the Jungle in one piece. Also, good to see a recognisable picture of you at last. At least we know you are really there now!

Next project building a gravity water feed system for 200 people sounds interesting. Will look forward to hearing more. Football News - Birmingham City `Destroyed' Arsenal in the Carling Cup. Unfortunately I couldn't get a ticket in the end. Also Derby seem to have halted their slide into relegation by getting Frank Fielding back plus two strikers in on loan. Have a great time out there. See you soon, Dad.

Hi Sam (Mizen) Alpha 9,
More photos!Great stuff! Thanks Raleigh! It's wonderful to see you and your group looking so happy and relaxed!I've googled the Kiulu Valley and the Crocker Range and it looks absolutely stunning!I know you'll have a fantastic time and savour every minute of trekking, removing leeches, cooking delicious food and diving in some of the most beautiful waters in the world. Running out of superlatives now so hope you get this before your final return to Base Camp. Take care, lots of love, Mum & Dad xxx

hi Mathieu in alpha 2,

Nieuwe groep, nieuwe karakters, even aftasten weer.

Take care en heel veel plezier,

Message fro Asheigh,
Hi Ash,
I sent you a message on Saturday but it hasn't appeared on the blogs so I'm not sure if you got it. It's great to see you in the photos. Everyone is asking about you and I am directing them to the Raleigh website. I see you are in Alpha 8 and going to trek for the next 12 days. It's good to see you with the others... they look like a great bunch. The twins are calling for you 'Ash? Ash?'. They are staying over tonight (Monday), so you will probably get a better nights sleep than we will. Dad said to remember your diary. Hope you are well. Have fun!
Love you,
Mum

Hi SAM CLIFT.
Looks like you're having an amazing time! 6 days on Dive Island sounds incredible I am extremely jealous that I'm not out there doing it all myself.
We're all so happy that you're having a good time and that you're enjoying the experience.
Take it easy bro. Have fun stay safe.

Hi Sam,
Just seen your photos after selection into A9. So you're trekking through Crocker National Park? I always said that only Orang-Utans can understand your early morning grunt, now you'll find out. We've been researching the area you're going to and it looks spectacular, Mum wants to come although I think the first fist-sized flying insect she encounters will have her back on the plane in double-step. You might be lucky (?) to see a Stinkflower (Rafflesia); biggest flower in the world. It flowers at midnight after a rainy day and lasted only for a few days. After that, they will begin to rot emitting a nauseating rotten meat smell; a bit like your bedroom!-). We hope you manage to get some white water rafting in Kiulu Valley. It's worth taking some cash to ensure a memorable experience, it beats rafting down the concrete sluice at Nottingham. 6 days diving; I fancy that myself although skydiving is less stressful. Mum said that we'll have your bed because you'll be used to sleeping in a hammock, so I'll fix a couple of hook brackets. I bet you're finding hammock sleeping difficult initially but you won't care after the first few days of trecking; it'll be a luxury to collapse in something supportive.
Have fun; we'll be following your progress. xxx

Hi Nick H (now alpha 2)

Just think you need to read this sent today from Pauline(28/02)-
'Great news, I have spoken to Camp America and I have accepted Nick as a staff member for summer 2011. Obviously I still want to have the opportunity to speak to him, but I can only hold him on Camp America’s website for a week, then his information goes to other camps, and I don’t want to lose him. Nick can call me anytime from March 18th, his phone service is limited so whenever he has the opportunity to use the phone he can call me 860 307 2901.
Thanks so much for being his coordinator in all this.
Keep in touch Pauline'

On the site it says congratulations you are now placed starting on 15th June 2011. Whoopee!!

Enjoy your time on the loo building, still miss you buckets babes, mum and dad xxx

For some reason it doesn't say which Alpha you're with under your picture, just that you're with PMs Helen and Petr. From my super-sleuth Wallander-like detective skills I deduce you're in Alpha 5!! Am I right? I hope all goes well with the water feed system building 'n all.

The weather is pleasantly cooler here at the moment but set to be scorching by the time you arrive! Really looking forward to welcoming you to Cambodia, I've planned some trips for us :-)

You've lots to enjoy before then, bro. Keep up all the smiles and g'luck with all of it.

Dearest Razmy

Was so good being able to talk to you over the weekend. Am so happy that you are having a wonderful time.
By the time you read this you would probably have finished the first bit of trekking and onto diving. What an experience!
We are all well... Oh.. Not quite.... We managed to lose to birmingham in the carling cup final!! .. How on earth did that happen!??? You can imagine how razlan was..
Devastated! Of course RvP had to get injured in the process! Not sure how long he is out for. They missed fab and walcott who were out injured :(. Tmrw there is the fa cup replay.. Hopefully they can put this defeat behind them.
Chelsea meet MU tonite. Razlan still busy win imu with the oreintation. He is staying over again tonite. Bam is busy studying for her mid year exmas which start next week. Its her bday soon so she is looking forward to that. Not sure what we are doing yet. Senget had her little operation today. She is back from the vet and is more senget than ever coz is still groggy :)) quite funny really.
Have posted a letter today with the flight schedule for you to choose.
Enjoy the rest of this phase. Take care of yourself, take lots of photos. Hope to hear from you soon.

Dear James Mclean 11b alfa8, You all looked very happy on your photo before your rainforest of long Pasia trip. I'm sure alls going well for you all. Geraldine was with us for last evening, before going on to Crewe, we shared the champange that Alf bought us for Christmas, Lewis was here to, was like a little party. Disapointingly Grandad will not be able to weight bear for another month, as you can imagine he was not very happy, the xray showed his bones had not healed together, the consultant said if they haven't grown together next month, then he would alow him to weight bear as weight bearing can help bones to heal, he felt if Grandad tried now his bones may shatter again. Were all trying to keep him occupied and visit as much as we can. Its cold today but the sun is shining, I've just got back from work so were going to walk in the park. lots of love from all of us Mumxx

Visiting many galleries ,booked to go up the Eiffel tower in the evening ,a river trip and a market visit.Dad and Max staying home alone but planning a few runs together ,a shopping trip and dinner out ,sure they will also have a good time.
Your car is still going well , had it cleaned today , looks good. My new car due to arrive by the end of the month!!!

Geniet ervan!!

Heel veel liefs,
Anouk (en Mathijs) xxx

for James Astbury (Alpha 6, phase 2)

Good to hear from you last Friday, though it was probably an expensive call. The Loop is leaving sooner this time, so I hope this gets to you early in the project and you enjoy the next 2 weeks; if not, hope you've enjoyed the last 3 weeks and the bugs weren't too big. On the other hand, if you coped with seeing a tarantula jump (or was it you?) and enjoyed the delights of tiger leeches, then I'm sure other wildlife's not a problem.

Still being asked where you are and what you're doing. Mary B says hello and wishes you well; William says 'thanks for saving me 50p per malaria tablet' - he went to a chemist you had used after I told him about your research. Andy showed me some of the underwater photos he took in January in the Red Sea, so maybe you should have another go later.

Dad asks if you're glad you took your raincoat; Mum says I bet you haven't used it/'lost' it. Have yet to send you the PO card, so may not get it at next changeover, but perhaps the NW has reached you??

Look forward to hearing about your project through the blog, and maybe from you at changeover. Keep enjoying yourself and don't forget the diary ....

lots of love from Mum, Dad, Alex and Lis xxxxxxx

Tom, first you build toilets on the sun kissed shores of a lake in Africa, then build more toilets on an idyllic tropical island in Malaysia. Presume you are honing your construction skills further at the BSBCC. Hope you will be up for some building projects when you get home. I am making a list.

(Which I have lovingly passed around facebook!) Genuinely jealous of you, looks like your having an absolutely amazing time. Certainly much better than in grey grey Sussex at the moment. Keeping stick at the walking... I am expecting a Size 0 Louise when you get back!

Hope you have an amazing time and I cannot even describe how much I am looking forward to seeing you when you get back.

What's new in Pompey - not much, though Luke has managed to convince Jamie to buy a rebreather, doh! Lee still hasn't got a job (shocker); and I've just chucked in the PGCE course and now an official unemployed bum atm, woo!

Hi to Leah (Alpha 1)

Great to see you survived the jungle adventure and hope that the dive provided some relaxation! You'll be well into the start of the gravity water feed system by now - Dad would have some ideas on that!! All's well - Joel has had an offer from Sheffield which he's rightly chuffed about and Dad has been promoted (!) to work with Pete
which he's happy about. Miss you - 2nd letter and one from Grandma on their way. Lots of love from us all, Mum xxxx

Helen, Paula, and James, a big hello to my old PM buddies! Really sorry I've not written the letters I promised, I just don't really know where the time has gone, how is it march already?? I've continued my life as a gap yaar student travelling to India and Argentina and in a few weeks off to Nepal though it's all a lot harder out of the Raleigh bubble and think I might need the 3 bowls in Nepal! Anyways, really excited to see you're all heading off on your projects, they sound very exciting (what's not to love about a gravity water feed or trekking in Long Pasia?) and it's making me so nostalgic. I hope you are having the best time and the venturers are not giving you too much grief (though just enough to keep it exciting...Helen I know you know what I'm talking about!). Will be checking the blog to see how you get on. Big hellos to Mac, Sarah and Yo! Oh and of course Chris, just remembered he's the Logs Manager! Hi Nico, (Alpha 9)

Saw your pictures of you being the quartermaster, excellent work! Diving and trekking should be good fun, your practice of walking from home to Russel Square will certainly come in handy! How did you find the diving, it's pretty cool right?

Just came back from skiing with Dad in Switzerland which was really good and also just saw Arsenal drawing against Sunderland (now 3 points behind United) - not so good.

Hope my camera is surviving, take lots of pics if you can. Mum and Dad thinking about coming out to Thailand or Malaysia but will keep you posted. Mum showed me a picture of your sleeping arrangements, it looks pretty hairy! Have you fallen out of bed yet!? Guess it will make you appreciate your bed at home now, your room incidentally is now a building site as all three of us took up the carpets today. Hope everything goes well and that your enjoying the culinary delights of the jungle, it's got to be better than Dad's cooking, right...?

Lieve Kelly,

Hi Lorne, thanks for the letters. They were great - who knew you had such good letter writing skills? You should write one for Veritas - I think everyone would find your news very interesting and entertaining.
I hope you have survived your trek. Hoping the dehydrated food is keeping you going and that you are surviving the marauding night time insects etc. I'm finding it difficult to imagine you sleeping in a hammock! Did you manage to find an extra long one or are your legs hanging off the end? I expect photographic proof that you slept suspended from trees in the jungle when you get home! I'm sure the Borneo jungle makes Vermont and Squam Swamp seem very tame - even the poison ivy and mosquitoes!
You will probably be diving by the time you get this. Have a blast and enjoy the relaxing and cool underwater world.
We have all written you letters and think about you all the time.
Lots of love and take care, Mom.

Hi Rob, We are pleased to see you have survived the trekking and diving and are still recognizable. Hope the work on the gravity feed is going well.

Dad went to Derbyshire last weekend and went up Win Hill with Ken in thick mist and rain. The forecast was for decent weather ! Hopefully the weather will be better at the end of March when we go to the Peaks for a few days then on to Bridlington.

United`s results have not been good over the last week – will spare you the details however they are still in the title race. On the bright side England`s cricketers tied with India and beat South Africa in the world cup. Unfortunately they lost to Ireland in between !

Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures. Have a great time and take care. Love Mum and Dad xxx
