View from the Loop

With the final phase of Expedition 10J well under way, it was time for Field Base to pay a visit to our static project sites (sorry trekkers!).  The Phase 3 Loop was manned by Ed, Tom and Emma, all excitedly looking forward to a whistle-stop tour of Sabah.

They were prepared to do whatever it took to bring chocolate and post to our venturers, clambering over enormous obstacles, crossing mighty rivers,

and if absolutely necessary, having naps in the back of the bravo.

The first stop was Alpha 6 at Maliau Basin, where the group were just completing the last few days’ work repairing the gravity water feed system.  The new dam is in place, and pipes have been installed to prevent future build-up of silt and debris and allow water to flow freely.

After a warm reception, a tasty dinner and a night in a hammock, the loop headed off bright and early to the next group.

Many hours of driving later, they arrived at Sepilok jungle camp to spend some time with Alpha 4.  Next day, still full from the previous evening’s hearty feast, our loopers visited the work site and were able to see for themselves how the team’s carpentry skills – and their muscles – have been developing over the course of the phase.

There was also just enough time to pass on an early birthday greeting for Abi's mum.

Next stop was Alpha 1 at Kampung Rumantai, where work on the kindergarten is showing fantastic results,

A helping hand from the Loop team was nevertheless much appreciated.

But demand for the Loop is very high, so there’s no time to linger!  Onwards to Alpha 2 at Kampung Pakagaya, to see what progress is being made on the gravity water feed there.  Thehardy Alpha 2 team showed the Loop that a little bit of rain is not enough to stand in the way of a good day’s work:

For now, the Loop is almost complete, with just one more visit to be made.  This time it’s Alpha 3, hard at work on the new community hall in Kampung Vunui Lokos.

As the Loop arrived, work on the construction site was going well,

and there was a festive mood in the camp.  The visitors were treated to a fine feast, complete with home- made Christmas crackers and decorations.  There was even some carol singing.

What nicer way to round off a Raleigh road trip?

Hoi Lisie,

Dear James Mclean alfa1 10j, Wow it was amazing to see the photos of the kindergarten almost complete, it made me very proud,it bought tears to my eyes to see all the hard work and skill you've all put it to build the school for the children. So many things make me realise how we have in this country, sometimes without thinking. You all continue to look happy in your work. Were going to pick ~Jonathan up in the morning, its very cold here, it was -8 on tuesday, though it should be a 0 tomorrow slightly less cold, but home is warm and cosy. Looking forward to seeing you soon, bring some photos if you can of the kindergarten with the children in, would be lovely to see, hope you recieved the parcel. lots of love Mumxx

For Marie Thomas.

Dearest Marie,

Big news! I got Peninsula deanary, so we're not Scotland bound! probably a good thing - not sure either of our parents would be that pleased with being that far away. I also scored high enough (86) that I'll be able to list any one hospitals jobs and be guaranteed a place there. So if we want Truro is very much on the cards. I don't have to submit my rankings until after you're back so we can pray about it together and then decide. Was very exciting to get the news though.

Other big news - have officially sorted your flights. You will be stepping onto English soil again at 10:20am on Wednesday 12th January.

Only a few more days until you have your closing ceremony - hope that trekking and diving has been very much a highlight of the trip.

Hopefully not long til I can start chatting to you properly again.

Miss you my love,

Matt x x x x

Hi Ellie,

Saw your photo on the Blog - not the best shot as you have your eyes shut!! You all look as if the weather and and work are taking their toll - it looks very wet and muddy!! Hope you are well and still enjoying the experience. We are all very proud of you. Can you believe its nearly over?
Mum is also living in harsh conditions. Camping out in your bedroom No bathroom. All her clothes in a bag!!!!! She's cracking the whip to get the builders moving before you come home!
William is very envious of your trip and is keen to do it himself -perhaps even Borneo. He claims he is now working hard for his highers (he has done well in his NABs) and has chosen an interesting course at Glasgow.
Isobel is worried that she'll be left at home on her own without any allies! Isnt that strange - just mum and her in the house!
Looking forward to seeing you.

Hi Maddy Good to hear news of the kindergarten project although I yet have to see you in any photos! I cannot wait to see you again next Saturday - so exciting! Tom broke up today and we had the carol service in St mary's it was lovely. It has been snowing so much here and been so cold I have never seen anything like it before in December. We are living in wellies and hats and gloves all the time! The kitchen in nearly finished and will be practically ready when you get home which is very exciting. Give me a ring if you can when you get back to the base camp. Ishbel comes home on Saturday too. It will be Christmas before you know it! I hope you are taking lots of photos - we can't wait to hear all the stories of your adventures. Lots of love mum Dad Ishbel and Tom xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Still trekking, we're guessing but about to dive anytime now? As it's currently -2c, we're feeling very envious of your final week; snow and ice here in Prague but suspect we're warmer than much of England! A half-naked Dan is hiding under the desk trying to avoid bathtime but sends you a "cuddle". Well, all the pressies sorted apart from yours, time to buy the tree from Novy Smichov next week and tomorrow afternoon it's party-time for Dad+Dan at the US Ambassador's residence. This time next week, you'll be airborne - quite amazing! Enjoy the last few days...lots of love from The Prague Badgershop Trio oxo

Hi Ellie,
Its Sunday - 1 week to go. I've been there so many times - counting the last days! I'm in London this weekend as I've a few things to do before leave.
Mum is doing normal weekend stuff - Isobel has her ballet exam today, so there's hair to do as well.
The latest with the builders is the bath is now downstairs in the hall. Mum is despairing. However at least the shower room and our bedroom look nice, the rest is a bombsite.
Gran T is excited about seeing you - I hope you can cope with the attention and being spoilt!!
Lots of love

All is well in the Greene world so nothing much to report except the bench in the kitchen has gone and the top of it is now the window sill! We are getting a new one which should be ready next week. OH MY GOSH - you are coming home soon :). I'm soooooo excited to see you. I found out something amazing yesterday... you know only men aloud - well this girl who is living with Sarah M. knows the one I have a major crush on, she used to go to school with him :O. ANNNNNDDD she saw him in the street and he recognised her and said 'hello', I'm sooo jealous right about now. I felt you might want to know about this because I feel I might need a trip to Wales sometime soon (not for stalking ofc) and just to let you know - you're coming with! I saw some pictures of you on facebook the other day. I was tempted to tag you as Muscles Mary, but you'll be glad to know I refrained. You've missed all the snow in Londinium and all the hoo-haa surrounding it and being as fortunate as I am the boiler broke in our house. At first I thought I might have frost bite on my hands and feet and then I realised I just needed to wash :P. I'm still pretty sure I might be suffering some form of physical distress and I know my mind is relinquishing to the power of the evil that is winter....think Jack Nicolson the shinning-esq. I thought you might like to know what's going on in the world so: it's the x-factor final tonight bets are on the group to win (Simon Cowell's category), most people are home from university this weekend or the next and I ran into a wall today. I think that's all the most important news, I can't wait to see you to tell you the rest. Have a wonderful last few days and don't forget to call me as soon as you have recovered from this epic trip. I really hope you've had an amazing time so far because there's not much time left. But to cheer you up think about all the tv and fast-food we can indulge in a one night period when you are back. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM - yummmayyyyy! Anyway I must go and tidy my room now (sleep), so I bid you farewell and wish you the best with the last few days!!!!
Mama Magooooooomba :) xxxxxx

NOW I wanna see your muscles! It's so nice to swim in the river every morning, so coooool. (: and the kindergarten is almost done. GOOOD for you! HAVE lots of fun there! I can't wait to see you soon!((:

Hello Shauna T
This will be my last blog. We are all great. I ma going to ply soccer next year with the senior ladies. Do you fancy it? I will need moral support. Zack will play with the new senior men's team and we will train together. I have started jogging every day in preperation as pre season starts in January. We are all well. Becky's birthday today. Travel safe and we will see you as soon as you are up for visitors and out of your nice comfy bed. Take care. Love Alicia and the Kilminster hotel

To Paula Barratt

Hi Paula,
The office black-tie dinner was held last night and it seemed as if somebody was missing... oh yes! it was you!

Hope you're having a great time in Borneo - looked through the more recent blogs and couldn't see any photographs of you but trust you are still there. Looking forward to hearing all about your adventures when you return. I'm sure you must have heard that Olga has left... you haven't been gone very long, but there have certainly been a lot of changes in these parts!

Enjoy the rest of your jungle journey and hopefully see you in the New Year.

Happy Christmas!

for Olivier Uijtewaal
Skileraar in Oosterrijk. Ook weer zo'n prachtige tijd. Olivier je bent mijn oudste en grootste neef en ik ben reuze trots op je. Dikke kus Tante Vicky ( ha ha klinkt zo leuk)
